Murray is Past Chair of the Kikuyu Action Group which was instrumental in undertaking much of the early farm systems work with kikuyu.

Murray and his wife Helen have a 550ha dairy and beef farm at Taurikura Bay, Whangarei Heads. The dairy farm milks 560 jersey cows producing 170,000 kgMS a year and employs four staff.

Murray has been involved with LIC since 1994 as a liaison farmer, a National Councillor for Whangarei and a Director since 2000.

Murray is also President of the Whangarei A&P Society.
